John Parrish and rg Steinman will be leading the The Friends of Ten Mile Creek and Little Seneca Reservoir (FOTMC) annual Watershed/Wildflower walk from 10:00 to 2:00 on Saturday, April 12th. We are calling this a Watershed/Wildflower Walk because FOTMC is a watershed group, with wildflowers as one component of the watershed.

We will meet at the Cinque Farm, 22300 Slidell Rd, at 10:00 am and depart, by hay wagon, at 10:15 to cross the ford, where our walk begins. This walk will be an exploration of a section of the Ten Mile Creek watershed – the flora, fauna, hydrology, and soils. We will be exploring the forest and trails on the 50 acres of land that Norman Mease is gifting to FOTMC. This will be an easy, less-than-2-mile walk. We will be staying on trails most of the way as we explore this special upland forest adjacent to Ten Mile Creek and visit a wildflower hotspot on the bottomlands.

Some wildflowers we expect to see along the way include Spring Beauty, Violets, Toothwort, Rue Anemone, Wood Anemone, Trout Lily, Bloodroot, Mayapple and Dwarf Ginseng! Another highlight of our walk includes uncommon County trees – the Eastern Hemlock and Shagbark Hickory. And maybe we can turn over a few rocks in the creek and discover one of the many Salamanders that live in this high quality Ten Mile Creek. Along the way, we will find a stopping point where we can simply sit and enjoy the forest.

At the end of the hike, the hay wagon transportation will return us to the Cinque Farm around 2:00 pm, where light refreshments will be served. For directions and to RSVP, contact Anne Cinque at 240-361-7394, email acinque2@gmail.com

In the event of steady rain, our rain date is Saturday, April 19th.

Bring water and sturdy walking shoes and a snack if you would like.
